One of the most prominent features of the God of Israel is that He speaks. This makes Him the most unique and Living God. (Psalms 115:5-7; Ezekiel 12:25) His revelation is verbal and is even referred to as “His Word.” One of the most important questions of Scripture is, “From where is it revealed?” Does it originate from tradition or enlightened philosophies or from direct communication?

The idea of how we get the Law of God is best exampled on the famed Mount Sinai. From the very finger of God, Moses received the laws of God. (Exodus 31:18; 34:1; Deuteronomy 9:10) Understanding the specific target of the Law, the next best question for Israel was, “Who is Israel?” Once the identity was established, as to who God expected to receive His word, God also established Israel as the one who was supposed to preserve and live out His word until the Messianic arrival. (Psalms 147:19-20)

God leads His prophets by giving them the words of His wisdom. (Jeremiah 1:5-9) Ezekiel literally ate the Scroll of God. (Ezekiel 3:3) Like the prophet placing wise words in the mouth of the woman of Tekoa, (2 Samuel 14:3-19) God expected a sound reverence and acceptance of His word. Those who would reject the words of the prophets would be held accountable for rejecting God. (Amos 2:12; Micah 2:6) Real prophets bear the word of God, contrary to those self-proclaimed and otherwise unauthorized con-men. (Jeremiah 28:12-17)

The greatest reform in the history of Israel began with an accidental discovery of the Book and a re-commitment to the Word of God in 621 B.C. (2 Kings 22) The book that was discovered was the guiding wisdom of God for His people. Israel needed to repent and saw such necessity in that same restudied, formerly forgotten, Book.

In the New Testament we find that God’s proclamation is “God-breathed.” (2 Timothy 3:16) It is literally from the mouth of God.

Without trying to be overly academic we can see that Scripture proclaims God’s authorship. If it were a human product one might argue for possible mistakes or other inaccuracies. We either give the authorship and consequently the authority for the Word to God to whom it is due, or we make human adjustment to a traditional and very human construct. The question for us is, “What do we choose to believe?”

I pray that you can find yourself relying on the Word of God as His divine wisdom. Satan is trying to destroy our faith, our focus and our Lord. He has already lost. Godspeed on your journey.
